Spiritual Retreat on the Divine Will

At the beginning of the morning Don Marco Cannavò "warned us": an intense day in which we were going to be called to put at stake all of ourselves, not only relativizing all the good intentions that led us to participate in this retreat, the first of the local Divine Will meetings in Lombardy, but above all our ways of relating ourselves to God.

The call to live in the Divine Will is normally welcomed by those souls who love Jesus and who want to give Him all the best of themselves. These souls desire to draw from Luisa’s writings, the confidences between Jesus and the little daughter of the Divine Will to be able to correspond more and more to God’s Love and surround Him with all the contentment and tenderness that their heart suggests. In doing so, however, unconsciously, we risk (I am also directly involved on this point) to encourage that part of us that, by grace, already reached a good development. But in this way we don’t give Jesus the opportunity to heal us in deep, right in the gaps and "distortions" that characterize us and that contribute to increase Jesus’ bitterness.

Therefore, Don Marco reminded us that Jesus does not want only the best of us but EVERYTHING. From the Gospel of that day, don Marco offered us the opportunity to understand how we should approach Luisa’s writings in a fruitful way. In fact, Sacred Scripture contains what is indispensable  for our life and is the necessary foundation of the life of Christian faith. Luisa's private revelations are a privileged instrument to help us understand, study and put into practice what the Word of God tells us. The healing of Bartimaeus, like all the passages of Sacred Scripture, shows us the way in which God approaches us in order to transform our life and bring it back to the fullness that He has always wanted for us. It is not only important to perceive the closeness of Jesus and the opportunity that He offers us, but we need to become aware of our lack and to ask, precisely for these, His intervention.

Don Marco explained that when Luisa, under obedience, wrote what Jesus said to her during His visits, she often said: "I was in my usual state". With these words she wanted to express the state of cadaveric rigidity in which she was. She could not autonomously recover and for this reason, the priest's intervention was necessary.  All this led me to reflect on the role of the "cross" in the sanctity of living in the D.W. Jesus "divinizes" our life not through the great mystical enthusiasms that are gratifying. Even if these impulses are a necessary phase of "falling in love" to attract us to Him, Jesus makes us experience our limits, our "poverty and nothingness" so that, far from any danger of pride and arrogance, we can learn to turn to Him ever more often, until we become aware that we can not do anything without Him. If we let ourselves be molded with docility, we are increasingly aware that God supplies with infinite and tender care despite all our incapacities and wounds that we accumulated, both those we received and those we got ourselves. Only in this way we  can desire to do nothing without Him.

It is the "rebirth from above" of which Jesus speaks to Nicodemus. This requires the necessary gestation of a slow and hidden work of the  Holy Spirit that leads us to be born into a new life, often externally, not at all different from the previous one. It’s the passage from "doing" to "living" the D.W. We often observe the commandments to protect ourselves from deleterious remorse, in the certainty (this is also faith) that God in His goodness can reward us abundantly as His faithful servants. We should let ourselves be picked up by Him and lose our usual points of support on earth to get used to seeing everything that surrounds us from His point of view. It is the life of a little child who with confidence relies his small head in the heart of His father and understands, from His beats, what gives Him joy and what hurts Him. He doesn't think about himself and his benefit,  but he concentrates on trying to make his father  happy in all possible ways.

He understands that misunderstandings cause much suffering to his father, and for this reason he stops comparing himself to his brothers to put himself in light. Furthermore, he wishes to make his own contribution despite his own incapacity, he challenges the father with great confidence so that his father can help him in his intent to make Him loved by everyone. In doing so, each one in the concrete situations of his own existence, can allow Jesus to repeat His life, not only to do what He wants but above all to be like Him, leaving Him ever more freedom of action, as Jesus did towards the Father ( Jn 14: 9-14).

The loving presence of the Virgin Mary accompanied, as in a soft background, every reflection and the intense Eucharistic Adoration that was animated by the meditation of the Hours of the Passion. The Virgin Mary was the first creature who lived totally in the Divine Will through the merits of Jesus, God and Man. Don Marco entrusted to Her the project to establish in Lombardy some study groups on the writings of Luisa so that, with the indispensable help of our Queen Mother, the Kingdom of the Divine Will can be enriched more and more by many children.

I congratulate Don Marco for all his commentaries. In his above commentary, the words: " . . . allow Jesus to repeat His life, not only to do what He wants but above all to be like Him " are very significant. My prayer, starting with myself, is for those enamoured with Luisa's writings is to constantly beg Jesus for that very great grace. Thomas Fahy
